This image puts me in the mood for Hanukkah, reminding me of two of my favorite foods: fried potatoes and cranberries. This year Marty made fantastic cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving, and with Hanukkah coming so soon after, we still have plenty for his latkes, too!

One of our family traditions is that I get eight gifts for the kids from Target—that break immediately. What are some of your family traditions?

Jessi Hagood is my new intern, a talented photography student from Greensboro, NC. She’s been making some shots of her own while we are working, and some of them are great! She made the photo above on one of our shoots at Mount Vernon. It’s one shot I couldn’t have captured, as it’s literally from “behind the scenes.” (Now that I see it, it makes me wonder how I avoided toppling off that bin!)

“‘Mitsitam’ means ‘Let’s eat!’ in the Native language of the Delaware and Piscataway peoples,” according the website of the amazing Mitsitam Cafe at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. Last year I shot their beautful food for this newly released cookbook.

Anyone who has eaten in museum cafes (sometimes OK, sometimes really bad!), will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of food at Mitsitam Cafe. They have a remarkable concept and menu of indigeneous, regional Native American foods. All selections there are inspired by Native foodways, and many offerings are very authentic. The dish above is a Fiddlehead Fern Salad, featured on the cover.

“YUM 2 (Even Yummier)” is the second annual exhibit of DC-area professional food photographers’ work being shown at The Art Institute of Washington. It’s part of the huge FotoWeekDC event. I’m happy that I was asked to show again this year! Here are some selections of my work included in exhibit. I made the carrot photo for Millenium Restaurant in San Francisco, CA; and, the caviar shot was for  Ridgewell’s Catering in Washington, DC.
